Why you don't really want to stop smoking

As a smoker, you are always in a conflict. You wish you didn't smoke, but you still want to go on doing it.

This conflict will not go away, and that is why you put off ‘making the decision to stop’, or ‘want to think about it’. But you have already made the decision that it would be better to be a non-smoker, so there is no need to think about it any more!

The hesitation is because it is in the nature of smoking that you don’t really want to stop. Nonetheless, the important thing is to accept this but come anyway – otherwise you you may well smoke for the rest of your life.

What about nicotine replacement?

Nicotine chewing gum or patches, hypnosis, acupuncture and other 'aids' to stopping smoking are unnecessary and may make it more difficult. The reason for this is that they perpetuate the widely held but mistaken idea that stopping smoking is terribly difficult without superhuman will power or some outside agency which will take over the task for you.

How does the Clinic's programme work?

For most smokers, the reasons they think they smoke (enjoyment, habit, relief of stress, as an aid to concentration, etc) are illusions or rationalisations. Once the real reason for smoking is understood, smokers realise there is no point in doing it any more, so they don't! In other words, you will be helped first to lose the desire to smoke, then to stop - not the other way round. Thus, you will have no difficulty in refraining from something you don't want to do.

For the great majority of smokers, this is achieved in a one-to-one 90 minute session of teaching and discussion.

Aversion therapy is not used. In fact, very little is mentioned about the harmful effects of smoking because these are things smokers know already. Instead, you will be taught things you probably don't know or fully understand.

How much does it cost?

The fee is ¥60,000 for an individual or ¥80,000 for a couple (plus tax). Group sessions can also be arranged. A few people may need a further one or even two sessions for which there is no extra charge. Telephone and e-mail support are also provided.

Is there a money-back guarantee?

This question doesn't really apply. What you will be taught is not so much a method with a certain percentage of successes and failures, but a completely new way of looking at smoking - based on the reality of why people smoke - which, once it is understood, cannot fail. The important thing is to make a commitment to yourself that you will return for one or more free sessions in the unlikely event that you have not happily stopped after coming the first time.
